Relate Theater to your Major

Theater is an on stage performance that can relate to almost anything in life. My major is criminology; I am not exactly sure what I want to do with my major, but right now I am looking into law enforcement mostly at the FBI. Criminology in a basic definition is the study of crime, criminals, criminal behavior and corrections as an individual and social phenomenon. For a career you can go into many different directions. One could take an approach as a scientist and study crime (why people commit or do not commit crime). Most people who go to college to study criminology though look at law enforcement from a state trooper to a correctional officer in a prison. There is also a way into top government agencies with a criminology major ones you have probably heard of is the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigations), CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration), and ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives). The Federal Bureau of Investigations top ten priorities are to “protect the United States from terrorist attack, protect the United States against foreign intelligence operations and espionage, protect the United States against cyber-based attacks and high-technology crimes, combat public corruption at all level, protect civil rights, combat transnational/national criminal organizations and enterprises, combat major white-collar crime, combat significant violent crime, support federal, state, local and international partners, and upgrade technology to successfully perform the FBI's mission.”
As you can see the FBI has a wide range of tasks to do. Having a theater class will help with this because in your life you have to have a wide range of different roles, and one of these roles could be to mislead people who want to harm others; whether it is people in this country, in other countries, or people trying to harm others through computers. In theater you have to take a role that is not you and get the audience to believe that is who you really are. In reality you could be a very nice caring person who would never hurt a fly, but you might have to get the people to believe that you are a jerk that went on a killing spree and is trying to avoid capture. To be good at this you have to change all aspects of who you are and have to be willing to do so. Some people are who they are and will not or can not change that so they could never have a chance in acting. To be in the FBI one might have to seem to be a drug dealer or some form of terrorist and get the actual criminal to believe him or her enough to do some kind of deal or get enough information against the criminal to be able to put them away in prison no questions asked.
To learn to be a good actor kind of means that you learned how to trick people in a certain way, this is not always a bad thing. To be some form of undercover agent is all about deception, you put your life on the line to get someone else to trust you enough so that they will do illegal things with you most likely with a hidden camera rolling.

Show Report
I have always wanted to go and see a Broadway show but never really had an opportunity to. I never had the opportunity because I have only been to New York City a couple times and that was just for the Macys Day Parade when I was younger too, and all I even remember from that is it being freezing cold and never wanting to go back. My brother recently went to New York City with his friend and they went to see a Broadway show they saw Wicked. He is not the type of person who would ever what to see a show like that but he said it was awesome and that just got me wanting to go even more. The musical I really want to see though is The Lion King.
When I was younger the Disney movie The Lion King was big and I liked it so much. I remember watching the movie constantly then I found out there was a video game for the super Nintendo out. I use to play that game for hours and hours nonstop. As I got older though the whole lion king phase started to fade away and I did not care much about it anymore. I remember in 8th grade music class watching some video on Broadway and they showed something about The Lion King on there and how it was one of the best Musicals in the world. This peaked my interest back then and wanted to see this musical so badly since then.
The Lion King is a Tony Award and Olivier Award-winning musical based on the 1994 Disney animated movie The Lion King. This Musical is directed by Julie Taymor a great director and the music is by none other than Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice. The musical features actors in animal costumes as well as giant, hollow puppets. The show was first played off Broadway in 1997 and was an instant huge success. The Lion King was already overseas by 1999 premiering in the United Kingdom. To show its crazy success “a Canadian production of the show was staged in Toronto and ran for nearly four years at the Princess of Wales Theatre. The Lion King ran from 1999 - 2004. A Los Angeles production began performances at the Pantages Theatre on September 29, 2000 with an official opening on October 19, 2000. The show closed on January 12, 2003 after 952 performances. The Lion King played at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney, Australia, from October 16, 2003, until June 26, 2005. The production then ran at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne from July 28, 2005 until June 4, 2006.” This just shows the success of the musical by how long it lasts where ever it shows.
Just looking at all of the success The Lion King has had it is a sure thing that this musical will not be a bust, especially to someone who enjoyed the animated film of the lion king. This musical is probably the last step to anything having to do with The Lion King until someone else tries to make some movie or something to try to make some money off of the name it has all around the world. I am still waiting for an opportunity to see this play and I hope it does come soon.

Relate Theater to your passions and hobbies
A major aspect to theater is taking a certain role that is not necessarily how you would usually act. In theater you have to get the audience to believe something that you are not. This can be a very difficult task but if you can master this you would have a bright future. When I relate theater to my passions and hobbies there are a lot of similarities.
Sports are one of my favorite things to do or watch. I am a very competitive person so it really does not matter too much what sport I am playing but my favorite are the three main sports football, basketball, and baseball. When playing these sports you kind of become something you are not. When I play football all I am about is stopping the other team from scoring with whatever it takes and trying to score with whatever it takes. In basketball and baseball it is the same situation. Nothing else matters when I am competing in something especially one of these three, all I am concerned about is one goal and that is to win. I know you are probably thinking how this has anything to do with theater but theater has its one main goal to and that is to perform well and put on a good show for the audience, and if you have some other sort of distraction it makes that goal so much harder to reach. An example of having a distraction bringing everyone down is having a player on your team who has some other problem and the team focuses on that and not there job on the field or court. Or maybe an actor in a play does a horrible job because they are distracted by some other outside event and their screw up could make the play look not as believable. A theatrical team and a sports team are teams and if one person can not do their job it will bring everyone else down. I know majority of people who watch a play or even a movie see everything as separate, just each person doing what they need to do but it is a lot more than that. I have seen plenty of movies when there is an actor or actress who looks like they are acting and I do not believe what they are trying to sell (that they are an evil killing person or a nice caring person). When I see movies like this that have just one person who does not live what to what the situation is asking for I become very uninterested and do not like what I am watching.
The Lion King staff is just as much as a team as the Pittsburgh Stealers staff is. The actors, actresses, stage crew, producers, choreographers, the director and many more have to work together just like all of the players and coaches of any sports team have to do to achieve their main goal. If one person falls apart everyone will fall apart.

Broadway

My brother recently went to see the musical Wicked. He is not the type of person that would go and see a Broadway show but he had the opportunity too and it’s not something that people get a chance to do often. He said he would love to go back and see another musical on Broadway after he saw Wicked.
Almost everyone has seen the movie The Wizard of Oz and loves the Scarecrow, the Lion, the Tin Man, Dorothy, and of course her little dog and everyone hates The Wicked Witch of the West because all she does is cause problems. Wicked is the story of the “terrible witch.” The story is that of the wicked witch of the west and her relationship with the good witch of the north, Glinda. The relationship between the two struggles because they have different views. One is that they have a rivalry over the same love interest. Secondly they have different thoughts to the wizard’s corruption of the government. Thirdly is “Elphaba’s public fall from grace.” The main story line is before the Wizard of Oz but it does have some dialogue and back story from that blockbuster movie. This musical made its Broadway debut on October 30, 2003. Wicked was produced by Universal Pictures and directed by Joe Mantello, and the musical staging was by Wayne Cilento.
The potential of this global success was discovered by Stephen Schwartz. He read the 1995 Maguire novel and immediately saw how much of a success this could have. Schwartz met up with Maguire in 1998 and persuaded him to release the rights for a stage production. Schwartz wanted the plot to follow that of the wicked witch and he hired the Emmy Award winning writer Winnie Holzman to make this happen.
Some of the main characters are Elphaba (The Wicked Witch), an intelligent but misunderstood girl who has green skin. She has a rebellion against the wizard which gives her the name “The Wicked Witch of the West.” Galinda (later Glinda the good) is beautiful and ambitious. She has an opportunity to join the Wizard even though he is corrupt, and wants to be known as “Glinda the Good.” The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is the dictator of Oz and makes himself seem as though he is a sentimental man, but is the reason for the oppression of Oz’s Animals. He also then realizes that he is Elphabas father in the musical. These are just the three main characters and are played very well obviously by the musicals success.
I talked to my brother about this musical and what it was like and he did not know how to put it into words. He says how it is an experience one has to have because it is live and you are not watching a square screen. A play that I have always wanted to see is The Lion King because of the past I have had with the movie and the video game that I could not put down. When I get a chance to see a Broadway show I would like it to be The Lion King, but after looking at Wicked it seems like an extraordinary one also, and to see either one of these would be a great experience.
